IC’s 16U Girls win Tier 2 Gold at the Provincial Tournament!
April 25th, 2010

Congratulations goes out to the girls on a fabulous tournament! The team came into the Provincial competition with a stern approach to their opponents on Friday (knowing the how tough their pool was) and competed very well. Despite a short cast due to injuries, Interclub approached each match with a team approach to success. For the most part they played each of their opponents with grit and determination and battling till the bitter end. Although they ultimately finished fourth in their pool after day 1 the team’s spirits were still high in finishing the weekend off well.

On Saturday, the team finished 2nd in their pool, just short of making it to the Tier 1 playoffs for Sunday. They beat some tough competition, including the 9th ranked Phenix team from Ottawa. However, once they did not achieve this goal they had to reassess and re-evaluate their approach and ultimate outcome for Sunday’s competition.

On Sunday the team needed to win 4 straight matches for a Gold Medal in Tier 2. The first two matches IC won in straight sets versus the Maverick Trailblazers and BSV Smash. Both matches were won by a solid offence and relentless defence.

The semi finals found IC up against Kingston Pegasus. In the first tightly-fought set Pegasus led throughout, but IC brought it back and at the second time-out the score was Pegasus 25, IC 24. Close, but Pegasus won the next point and the first set went to them. In the second set IC put on a great fight, stepping up to a more aggressive game, and won 25-18. With a very strong start in the third set IC built up a 5 point lead but Pegasus came back, however it was not enough and IC won 15-9 to take the match and move to the final, ensuring a chance to compete for Gold.

Against Forest City in the Final, IC fought for every point and led throughout, winning 25-18. In the second set Forest City took the lead from the start and was ahead 20-18 at the first time-out. IC battled hard to get back in the game and drew even at the 20-20 mark. IC’s attack came on, and the defence held, allowing IC to pull past Forest City to win the set and take the match to win Gold for Interclub.

Way to go IC! Now on to the National Championships in Sherbrooke May 7-9.

IC’s 16U Girls compete in the Premier division at the Bugarski Cup
Saturday February 20, 2010

The Girls 16U Interclub team moved up into the Premier division recently and set out to prove they deserved to be in the top tier.

The girls took on the third seeded team, DRVC in the first match at this weekend’s U of T Tournament at the Scarborough campus. IC played hard to counteract DRVC’s targeted attack and stayed within 4 points in the first portion of the game but fell back in the closing to lose 13-25. In Game 2 IC started strongly posting a 7-0 lead however DRVC came back and controlled service to pull ahead 19-17 at the third time-out. IC’s opponents held their lead in what turned out to be a close game, but DRVC prevailed 25-22.

In the second match IC met Impact, the 4th seeded team. At the first time-out in the first game, IC was up 6-2 as serve receive improved but then deteriorated allowing Impact to pull ahead on strong service. IC’s attack faltered further and Impact won the first game 25-20. Impact kept IC on the defensive throughout the second game to win 25-13.

Next up against IC was FC Green. IC quickly posted a 6-0 lead but FC came back to tie the game 18-18 at the third timeout, which led to a seesaw battle with the lead changing hands until IC was down 22-23 but they came back and combined strong defense with a successful attack to win 25-23. In the second game IC again started strong, buoyed by great serving and excellent defense and built up a 11-3 lead. By the second timeout IC was ahead 22-15 and while FC attempted a rally IC shut them down to win 25-17.

The Titans Nemesis were drawn for the playoff match against IC, and in the early going of game one IC struggled to make their opponents win every point, and to play strong positional volleyball, resulting in a 2-10 deficit. After settling down following the second timeout, IC posted six straight points and tied the game at 24-24, but Titans prevailed 26-24. In the second game Titans led throughout and IC couldn’t make up enough ground losing 13-25.

Interclub’s 16U Girls ended the day having defeated a higher-seeded Premier division team and gained valuable experience playing a faster game against persistent and aggressive opponents.

Congratulations Girls!

IC’s 16U Girls win Gold at the 17U McGregor Cup!
Jan 23rd, 2010

The Girls 16U Interclub team began the tournament with a win over the Titans. IC came out strong, established an early lead, made their opponent earn their own points, and demonstrated smart play including many tip winners. This effort delivered a 25-16 win. In the second game the Titans took the momentum and won 25-22. In the deciding game IC beat the Titans to clinch their first tournament victory.

Game two was a default win as their opponents did not appear on court. To stay fresh IC played an exhibition match against the Titans, and won both games 25-23 and 25-18.

In the third match IC took on the LCVC Wings and overpowered them for a quick 25-4 win. The second game was more challenging. Prior to the first time-out the girls held a six point lead which eroded at the 19-19 mark. IC regained their focus and took the lead winning 25-20, moving them forward in the tournament.

The quarter-finals brought the IC girls up against the Peterborough Thunder, and beat them in both games; 25-17 and 25-22, taking the IC 16U girls into the Championshipgame.

Meanwhile the IC 17U girls were successfully making their way up the tournament ladder, which meant two interclub teams would compete for the Gold; 16U vs. 17U!

In game one the 16U girls took control, and led throughout, winning 25-17. In the second game, again the 16U girls showed their potential, kept their focus, aggressively pursued the ball, and attacked well. The final score…..25-16.

GOLD MEDALS for the IC 16U girls, their second Tournament win this season!

IC’s 16U Girls win Bronze at the Championship East McGregor Cup!
Jan 9th,2010

Going into the tournament the 16U Girls Team was tied for 1st place in our division with Storm Monsoon.

The Girls 16U Interclub team began the day with a win over the day’s first place finishers Phenix. IC led throughout the first set and prevailed to win it 26-24. In the second set Phenix was ahead 11-4 at the first time-out. IC dug deep and by the second time-out we were ahead 18-17, and the girls held that advantage until the final score; 25-21. IC next took on Durham Attack Red. In the first set Durham was ahead 15-12 at the initial time-out, but IC took the momentum away and did not allow a single further point for the Attack. The girls won 13 straight points to post a 25-15 victory for their 4th straight set win of the tournament!

The third match was against the Stingrays 94. IC came on strong in the first set and led throughout securing a 25-16 win. The second set was much closer winning 25-23 to secure first place in their pool with 6 set wins.

The quarter-finals brought the IC girls up against the Mavericks who led the first set 11-4 early on. Once again IC refocused their play, gained momentum and went on to win 25-21. That momentum continued in the second set but faded at the end, and Mavericks won 25-23, leading to a third set in which IC clearly dominated and won 15-8 to move to the semifinals.

The Storm Twister 15U team was the next opponent. In the first set Storm dominated throughout and won the set, however IC re-energized and snapped back to defeat Storm 26-24 in the second set. The third set was a genuine nail biter as the lead changed hands throughout but at the end IC team lost 14-16, setting us up for the Bronze Medal match against DRVC 15U.

DRVC established an early lead in the first set and held it to win 25-21 and some began to worry but in the second set IC responded and came out on top 25-18. DRVC then took the lead in the third set and went ahead 12-10 at the second time-out, but the IC girls rallied and posted 5 straight points to win, securing the Bronze medals for the team!
